When it comes time to install new HVAC equipment, the question of whether or not to clean the air ducts often arises. The answer: it depends.

Why?

Clean air is something everyone wants and needs to breathe in, and the cleanliness of the air ducts in a building can contribute to the overall air quality within it. The dirt, dust, and debris that accumulates in air ducts can be a perfect place for dust mites to call home. Add in a higher humidity and it has become an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and microbial growth as well.

Cleaning air ducts prior to installation of new HVAC equipment helps to reduce the potential of fire or explosion due to any combustible dust contained within the ducts. See our post on Combustible Dust for more information.

Aside from the potential health issues and dangers, dirty air ducts can impact the efficiency of an HVAC system. Having a buildup of soot, smoke, or dust can reduce air flow and prevent the system from running at its highest efficiency.

Who?

Determining who needs to clean their ducts prior to turning on newly installed equipment will depend upon the type of business, climate, and location. Healthcare facilities, casinos, manufacturing plants, and businesses where smoking is allowed should have their air ducts cleaned prior to installation of new equipment to ensure optimal performance. Office buildings where smoking is not allowed that are not located near manufacturing plants may not need ducts cleaned prior to installation of new equipment, but should have their ducts inspected.

Generally, all businesses should have their air ducts inspected prior to installing any new equipment as part of their overall safety check. Inspection of ducts, in multiple locations for larger buildings, determine if the ducts should be cleaned prior to installation.
